P. 26
Descending order (greatest to Smallest)
Example 2. Arrange the numbers in descending order: 8434, 9750, 465, 1265
Solution.
Step 1. Check the number of digits:
8434 → 4 digits 9750 → 4 digits 465 → 3 digits 1265 → 4 digits
465 is the smallest, so it comes last.
Step 2. Compare the thousands place:
'8'434 '9'750 '1'265
From 1, 8 and 9:
9 is the greatest, 8 is smaller than 9 but greater than 1 and 1 is the smallest.
So, the order becomes: 9750, 8434, 1265, 465
Note: If the thousands digit is the same, compare the hundreds place:
Example: 8434, 8750, 8265
From 7, 4 and 2:
7 is the greatest, 4 is greater than 2 and 2 is the smallest.
So, the descending order is: 8750, 8434, 8265
